Well picked one up this weeks end cheap as in $12 plus another $20 for a plug in for it. So now my small problem. Does this welder need to run with gas or can it run with the flux core wire or both. Looks like it has a gas tube and a place for a tank but since I got it used and no info with it hard to be sure.
Thanks

That one is not the exact same model but is close. I did print it out since it is close. The Model I have is 36692 but when I tried to find that in the Harbor Freight web site it came up with no such model so it maybe one that they no longer sell or some such thing. Thanks at least this gives me a little better educated guess as to the ins and out of this machine

Old,

On page 6 of the manual ia steve provided the link for it says:

'Check that +/– cables to connection Knobs (34) are correct. See photo (top-left).
When using non-flux wire and protective gas, connect wire cables as shown in photo.
For flux cored wire, no gas is required. Reverse cable connections.'

Chances are your welder has a similar setup inside the wire compartment. Harbor Freight sells a low end (lower end, I should say) wire feed welder that runs only flux core, but the Dual MIG 151 has always run both flux core and solid wire.

I once inherited an unused Dual MIG 151. I worked with it for about 1/2 an hour trying to get it to perform to any acceptable degree. People do use them, so I know that it can be done, but in almost no time I couldn't wait to get rid of it.

I'm not a harsh critic of Harbor Freight tools. They are what they are, and if you're careful you can find tools that might do what you need. My experience is that their welders are very poor. I've got their 80 amp invertor stick welder, and at 8 lbs running on 110V it's so convenient that it almost makes up for the fact that it's just not a quality piece of equipment.

With your welding background, I'll be very surprised if you end up thinking that welder is worth the aggavation it's going to cause you. An inexperienced person might not know the difference, but you will.

This welder has a place right on the front to change the leads so as to go from flux to gas but only came with gas type wire so I either need to buy a roll of flux core or set it up for gas or sell it LOL. Ya all the mig welders I have ever used where in the $2500 class range if not a lot higher then that but I did mig weld for many years as a living so yes I may end up with this welding going on Criag's list or some other such way of making a profit out of it LOL. But at times I have exhaust type welding to do so it may still get me buy for those small thin type jobs

If its got a tube on it then it runs both. But before you get to excited about it borrow a CO2 tank and check for leaks. Those units were prone to leaks after about a year or two. and the parts to repair it cost almost as much as a new HF machine. The good news is it will run flux core ok. If its like my machine you have to change the lead to a different position to switch from gas to flux. The welder itself does ok for a cheap machine, the wire feed isn't smooth enough to do really fine work. But it gets the job done. I have been mumbling to myself for about 5 years that I need a better unit, but given the limited amount I use it versus my stick welder I am too cheap to replace it till this one actually dies.

This one only has a single place for the lead so not like yours. Yep understand the better machines but then years ago I worked for a place and I was part of the maintenance dept so I worked on many of the good high $$ mig and tig units so I do understand how they work but then those where Miller units and you pay for them.

Not sure about that model but most mig welders will run either type of wire. Alot of the Chicago electric i have seen at Harbor Freight are set for flux core and have a gas set up that can be bought seperate. Just make sure you get the right size wire to fit liner, most migs have wire size stamped on drive rollers on one side or the other. Scott
