Licensing Standards For Home Daycares
As a local business, group day care centers must be licensed by the appropriate governing bodies and meet all of the business-operation requirements of their jurisdiction. Their facilities and operators must also meet the standards set by the state agencies responsible for licensing child care centers. The particular type of license varies depending on how many children you plan to keep in your care.
1.Contact your state's department of human or social services. Licensing requirements for group day cares vary from state to state and sometimes from municipality to municipality. In general, state or municipal departments of human or social services are responsible for daycare licensing and can give you detailed information regarding licensing requirements. In many cases, these agencies offer public information sessions where you can pick up license applications and ask any questions that you may have.
2.Establish a location for your day care. Requirements vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, but, in general, your facility must be large enough to accommodate your planned number of children, must be an open space so that children are never out of sight, and all heavy play equipment must be anchored down.
3.Establish a plan for your daily activities so that children are exposed to a balance of educational and recreational activities with time for naps and meals or snacks. Many jurisdictions require that time for outdoor play be incorporated into activity plans.

4.Get insurance coverage, which is a requirement before you can be licensed. You will need to get general liability insurance as well as medical insurance.
5.Complete whatever educational courses are mandated by your local jurisdictions. Depending on the location, you and your potential employees may be required to complete courses in topics such as CPR and basic first aid.
6.Obtain your federal and state tax identification numbers if you will be employing workers at your day care center. Become aware of state and federal laws about wages and employment issues.
7.Apply for your group day care license. You must apply for a state license, generally through the department of human or social services, and, in many cases, you must also apply for a municipal or county license. With your license application, you typically must submit detailed information regarding your facility, often including a floor plan or photographs. You and your employees must also submit to a background check and fingerprinting.
8.Undergo a thorough facility inspection by an official from the agency responsible for licensing in your jurisdiction. If your facility does not meet the standards of the agency, you generally will be given a chance to make the required improvements and undergo a second inspection.
